New Frontiers. Malpelo Island
For years the intriguing rumors of Marpelo Island have lured us towards visiting this remote ocean citadel.
The Island is located in one corner of the Pacific’s "Golden Triangle", which includes the riches of Cocos and the Galapagos. Lying 240 miles north of Colombia, Malpelo is as isolated as Cocos and provides rich rewards for the experienced diver.
The rocky outpost is 884 ft high, and has been described as an ancient monument erupting from the sea. There are few protected anchorages and the currents that flow through the area are strong. The attractions: Big animals, and lots of them. The island is, like Cocos, famous for schooling hammerheads, but you also have the chance of seeing whale sharks, humpbacks, an sperm whales near this open sea fortress.
Dive sites include a granite cliff, known as the Altar of the Virgin, that can have multitudes of free swimming moray eels, huge snappers and groupers, dolphin and mantas. Another site, a group of pinnacles off the northern en of Malpelo, is called the Three Musketeers. Here, divers enter a series of tunnels and caverns, (including a huge one called the Cathedral) filled with countless thousands of silvery baitfish, dozens of lobster, white-tipped reef sharks and groupers. The dive site La Gringa is where you can expect to see hundreds of hammerheads, black tips and other sharks on any given dive.
Each year between January and May we will make several trips to Malpelo Island. The trips will be longer than our regular Cocos Journeys, so that we have enough time to go to both Malpelo and Cocos. Join us in exploring these new virgin destinations and experience the excitement of diving the best shark sites in the world, as Undersea Hunter will be running expeditions to electrifying Malpelo for many years in the future. Malpelo trips beginning un February to july.
